Mantra Chanting
In January 2024 I visited lush green Ella in Sri Lanka. Walking up to Little Adam’s peak was amazing
experience and the chanting from temples in the area resonated around the surrounded hills and
gave this hike a spiritual touch that was not destroyed even by the heavy rain that came soon after
the sunrise (together with leeches YUCK!)

Mantra chanting is a part of my morning routine. I believe that this practice rooted in ancient
spiritual traditions can be a powerful tool for improving overall well-being. It generates a positive
energy, and not only for a practitioner. It can be approached from a traditional, spiritual or from
more scientific perspective.
Here are eight benefits of mantra chanting:
- Chanting reduces stress and anxiety – chanting activates the parasympathetic nervous
system which induces a state of relaxation, calmer mind and reduced anxiety levels can be
pleasant by-products, deep slow breathing during chanting activates the vagus nerve.
Stimulation of this nerve promotes relaxation. The repetitive nature of chanting can lead to
meditative state. - Chanting improves concentration – regular practice leads to mental clarity
- Mindfulness – when you practice chanting with dedication you can be only here and now,
chanting fosters mindfulness and by focusing only on the chanting we can forget about our
worries and stressors - Mood booster – chanting can stimulate the release of endorphins, happy hormones and pain
relievers. Also, the levels of serotonin and dopamine can be affected by chanting. These
neurotransmitters influence our mood and relaxation - Physical benefits – the shift from sympathetic nervous system to parasympathetic one helps
lower heart rate and blood pressure, the focus on breath control can lead to improved
respiratory health. When we chant the mantras, our tongue presses against the palate of the
mouth. This action then stimulates the hypothalamus, thalamus and pituitary gland. As a result, the secretion of certain hormones is enhanced and we can experience positive effect on body, mind and emotions. Several studies were conducted that examined the link between chanting and improved thyroid hormone balance. - Enhanced spiritual awareness – mantra chanting can deepen spiritual awareness and
enhance a feeling of connection to a higher power - Healing vibrations – the concept is based on the idea that sound has a profound effect on
the mind and body, when we chant a mantra, our vocal cords produce sound vibrations that
resonates through the body. These sound vibrations can influence our energy centers,
chakras - Sense of community and belonging – when practiced with a friend, family member or in a
group
And here are few tips:
Consistency – practice regularly, ideally at the same time
Posture – sit comfortably with a straight spine for better breathing
Environment – choose a quiet place where you won’t be disturbed

Till next time.
